Introduction: Each snowflake is unique as is each individual learner; no two are identical.
Individuals are unique. No learner is identical to another and therefore each learning process is akin to the uniqueness of a snowflake. The current "one size fits all" approach to curriculum design does not match all learning styles. In contrast to the current curriculum design model, Universal Design for Learning recognizes diversity and provides a framework that adapts curriculum design to meet the needs of all learning styles.
Prior knowledge is central to memory and learning in conjunction with the social cultural environment of the learner. (Jegede, 1995). UDL principles emphasize the influence that individual prior knowledge has on individual learning. Construction of new knowledge is inseparable from prior knowledge since the latter is used to build upon to create new conceptual understandings. UDL provides a guide for designing learning environments that enhance the interrelationship and co-dependence that exists between background knowledge and learning new concepts.
*Before you officially begin exploring the module content, your first task is to reflect on your existing prior knowledge.
We all have prior experience in educational settings that contribute to our perceptions and beliefs about learning. We have either attended school or for many of you, also have experience as teachers as well. All of your past experience and understanding of classroom dynamics and learning influences your approach to this on-line lesson. As an introduction exercise, please take a few minutes to reflect on the following question, and respond in the discussion forum.
*Reflect on a memorable lesson that you were a student participating and describe the elements that you feel enhanced your engagement in the learning process.
After you have posted your reflection, return to this page and watch the following video. What UDL elements resemble those that were evident in your reflection regarding a memorable engaging lesson as a student? Attach a thread to your previous post in the Discussion Forum to share your ideas. Then refer to the lesson Activities page.
